Blockchain Association Unveils Digital Asset Market Structure Principles

WASHINGTON, D.C. (Jan. 28, 2025) – Blockchain Association, representing more than 100 leading companies, investors, and firms in the digital asset industry, today released principles designed to guide the development of digital asset market structure policy. This landmark initiative represents an industry-wide consensus on essential elements for effective crypto regulation in the United States.

“These principles represent a signal moment for the digital asset industry, bringing together the collective expertise of America’s leading crypto and blockchain companies,” said Kristin Smith, Blockchain Association CEO. “After months of dialogue with our members, we’re pleased to be able to present to Congress and regulators clear, actionable guideposts that reflect broad industry consensus on how to build a competitive U.S. digital asset market while protecting consumers.”

“These principles aim to position the United States as a global leader in digital asset innovation while ensuring robust consumer protections and market stability. They specifically address critical issues such as the treatment of non-custodial software and services, staking activities, and the need for clear regulatory transitions,” said Sarah Milby, Head of Policy.

The framework outlines twelve core principles addressing key areas, including:

  • Consumer protection and market integrity
  • Innovation and competitiveness for U.S. businesses
  • Clear token classification standards
  • Protection of open-source software development
  • Rights to self-custody of digital assets
  • Fit-for-purpose approach to regulation
